Low Confidence: The hidden internal struggle

It’s not about lacking ability. Many of the people who struggle most with confidence are highly capable, well-regarded by others, and objectively successful. It’s the harsh internal voice that dismisses achievements, fixates on shortcomings, and quietly insists that sooner or later, others will see through them.

For professionals, this can show up as a constant need to prove yourself, difficulty accepting praise, or holding yourself back in your career. It can make success feel hollow and mistakes a source of anxiety — even when neither is really warranted.

Low confidence and self-doubt are often invisible to the people around you. Colleagues see someone who performs. Internally, the gap between how you appear and how you feel about yourself can be significant and quietly exhausting.

How Low Confidence tends to show up for professionals

Self-critical thoughts

A persistent, often harsh internal voice that questions your competence, dismisses your achievements, and anticipates failure — regardless of what the evidence actually suggests.

Imposter syndrome

A sense that your success is undeserved, that you’ve somehow fooled people into thinking you’re capable, and that it’s only a matter of time before you’re found out as a fraud.

Difficulty accepting praise

Deflecting compliments, downplaying successes, or being unable to internalise positive feedback — even when objectively you have performed well.

Perfectionism

Spending disproportionate time preparing, checking, and revising — or excessive avoidance of tasks which make it challenging to get started and stay on task.

Avoiding visibility

Not speaking up in meetings, turning down opportunities, or holding yourself back in your career — not because you lack the ability, but because being seen feels risky.

Difficulty making decisions

Second-guessing yourself, seeking excessive reassurance, or constant worry about making the wrong call — particularly in situations where others are watching.

If you’ve been managing this quietly for a while, you’ll know how exhausting it is. The effort it takes to push through when you think you aren’t good enough — and to make sure nobody else knows what’s happening internally — can take a real toll.

Confidence and self-worth challenges can connect to other difficulties that have their own dynamics. If any of these feels more relevant to what you’re experiencing, there’s more specific information available.

Social Anxiety

If low confidence is particularly triggered by social situations — fear of judgement, self-consciousness, or difficulty feeling at ease with other people.

Performance Anxiety

If self-doubt is most prominent in high-stakes moments — presentations, evaluations, or situations where your competence feels like it’s on the line.

Burnout

If the relentless drive to prove yourself has left you exhausted — and self-doubt is part of what’s been pushing you to keep going at an unsustainable pace.

What we work on together

  1. Understand what’s contributing to it
We explore the patterns — perfectionism, avoidance, harsh self-evaluation — that maintain low confidence. Understanding the cycle is the starting point for changing it.
  2. Change your relationship with thoughts
Mindfulness techniques helps you change how you experience self-critical thoughts. The new relationship with your thoughts, helps to reduce the influence they have over you and your behaviour.
  3. Build a more grounded sense of self
This isn’t just positive thinking. Develop a more balanced view of your self — one that’s less dependent on performance, external validation, or the absence of mistakes.
  4. Take values-guided action
Move toward the things that matter to you — opportunities, relationships, career goals — guided by your values rather than held back by the fear of not being good enough.

FAQs

I offer a forward-focused, evidence-based approach that works on understanding how self-doubt is showing up in your life now — and building practical strategies to manage it differently. The focus isn’t on endlessly analysing the past, but on understanding the patterns that are maintaining the self-doubt, how they’re affecting your work and life, and what genuinely helps. For professionals looking for a practical approach, this may be a good fit.

No referral is needed to book an appointment with me. You can get started by booking an intake call through the client portal.

If you’d like to access a Medicare rebate for your sessions, you will need a Mental Health Treatment Plan from your GP. It’s worth noting that your GP will need to provide a referral as part of this process.

That depends on your goals and what you’re working on. Some people come with a specific challenge or decision and find clarity in a handful of sessions. Others prefer ongoing support to build momentum, develop skills, and work through multiple areas over time.

In your first session, we’ll discuss your goals and work out an approach that suits where you’re at — whether that’s something targeted and short-term, or a longer-term plan. There’s no set formula, just a structure that works for you.

As we work together, I can provide guidance on what frequency and duration makes sense based on your progress and goals.

Some of the most capable and accomplished professionals struggle with self-doubt — partly because high standards and self-criticism can drive success, and partly because there’s rarely space in professional environments to acknowledge it. Success doesn’t protect against imposter syndrome or self-critical thoughts. If these thoughts make performing at work harder than it needs to be, you may benefit from support.

Surface-level confidence — the ability to present well, speak up in meetings, take on new challenges — tends to follow naturally when the underlying patterns shift. Our sessions focus on changing your relationship with thoughts, building a more balanced view of yourself, and helping you act in line with your values rather than in response to fear. The confidence that develops from that kind of work tends to be more durable than techniques focused on appearing outwardly confident.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is an evidence-based, mindfulness-informed approach. Rather than trying to argue with or silence self-critical thoughts, ACT helps you change your relationship with them. You learn to notice self-critical without being controlled by it, and to take action guided by your values rather than held back by fear of not being good enough. It’s practical, skills-based, and may be well-suited to professionals seeking a practical and skills-based approach.
